A Sandown charity worker is doing her bit to raise money for her own cause – by running the London Marathon on Sunday.
Sarah Tyrrell-Jones, 48, the Island’s community fund-riser for ‘Breast Cancer Now’, is hoping to complete a double after running last year’s event.
Sarah, who has been working for the charity for five years, explained: “I did it last year, and loved it so much I thought I would do it again!
“It’s such a massive achievement and makes a difference at the same time. You meet amazing people and friends and the crowd is just something to experience.”
However, things have not gone as smoothly as last year, when the race was held in October. She said: “I’ve had a bad knee injury, so I’ve had to be careful in training. Also, last year, we had fantastic weather during the summer, but I’ve trained during the winter this time. So there have been winds, rain and sleet to contend with, plus running in minus-one temperatures.”
But, despite the hard graft, Sarah is determined to complete the course and has already raised nearly £2,000 towards Breast Cancer Now.
The event was founded by athletes, Chris Brasher and John Disley in 1981, with more than 40,000 taking part last year.
