Santander Newport closed again as staff can’t open front door

UPDATE: The branch is now open

Santander customers have been turned away from the Newport branch for the second day running as staff struggle with a faulty front door.

The door to the St James Street branch on the corner of Pyle Street has been locking staff out since Monday (November 19).

Although a spokesman for the Spanish bank said they expected the doors to be open by 12pm on Tuesday (November 20).

A sign on the bank’s door blames “unforeseen circumstances” and adds that the store could be open again by 2pm on Tuesday.

A spokesman for Santander said: “Due to an electrical fault, the doors to our Newport branch are not functioning properly at present and as a result customers cannot access the branch. We are working to get this fixed urgently and would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience.

“Our external ATMs are still working, and branch colleagues are outside the branch to direct customers to an alternative branch. We have been in touch with any customers who have appointments booked in to rearrange for a convenient date.
