A 30‑year‑old Ryde man has been jailed for three years and four months, after admitting offences including controlling or coercive behaviour, and intentional strangulation, against a 55‑year‑old woman.
Bogdan Mistreanu, of Monkton Street, pleaded guilty at Isle of Wight Crown Court on January 26 to engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour in an intimate relationship, four counts of intentional strangulation, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and assault by beating of a 28‑year‑old man. He was sentenced at the end of last month.
The court heard that, between December 1, 2024 and December 21, 2025, the woman endured aggressive interrogations, regular assaults, and sustained physical, mental, and verbal abuse. In a statement, she described living in a “state of constant fear”, afraid to leave her home and deeply affected by Mistreanu’s refusal to take responsibility for his actions.
The abuse ended on December 21 last year, when she fled to a nearby pub after a serious assault. Mistreanu was arrested shortly afterwards.
DC Rory McKittrick said Mistreanu had subjected the woman to a “terrifying ordeal” for more than a year. He said the conviction was being highlighted with the woman’s consent to encourage other victims to come forward. “No‑one should live in fear in their own home,” he said. “Controlling or coercive behaviour is isolating and devastating. We take every report extremely seriously.”
Police urged anyone experiencing harassment, stalking, or controlling behaviour to seek help. Reports can be made via 101, or 999 in an emergency. Independent support services are also available, with further information available via iw.observer/domestic-abuse-advice.
