Sandown & District Historical Association, working with Shanklin Voluntary Youth & Community Centre, have launched the first cut of a new film in the Growing Up In The Bay series, highlighting the link between the monarchy and the Island, focussing on the Bay.
Narrated by local students Imogen and Neve Miller, who received certificates from IW High Sheriff, Dawn Haig-Thomas and Sandown’s mayor, Alex Lightfoot, viewers are guided through royal events. They include the late Queen’s visit to Sandown and Shanklin in 1965, recent visits of Prince Edward, and King Charles, when Prince of Wales, on his trip to Newport, with interviews by Islanders involved at the time.
Mrs Haig-Thomas said: “What a great film and piece of history! Congratulations to all involved in the making of it. I loved every minute of it.”
Cllr Lightfoot added: “It is a fascinating look back through history. Immy and Neve were both fantastic. It was good to see former mayors from Sandown and Shanklin, Heather Humby, and my father, Paddy Lightfoot, and representatives of community organisations at the screening.”
The film is available to view during February at iow.life/royalisle. There will be further cuts with new stories and memories at the premiere. The film was originally a Jubilee project, and has been updated to include recent events. You can find more about the series of films at iow.life/guitb.
