Positive masculinity workshop

Colleagues from educational settings across the Island took part in a staff workshop promoting positive masculinity at Christ the King College in Newport, last week.

A total of 60 people from Island primary and secondary schools, a post-16 residential care home along with staff from the IW Council’s Children’s Services Department, and local clergy, took part in training, led by Progressive Masculinity Ltd. The training supports Island professionals in delivering the curriculum and supporting young people.

The event looked at promoting positive behaviours and attitudes amongst male pupils, with young men particularly vulnerable to toxic online influences and stereotypes about what masculinity looks like.
Andrew Montrose, Headteacher of Christ the King, said: “The evidence is stark and, as an Island community, we wanted to learn how we can support our young people to create a masculinity that is consistent with our values; one that promotes equality, tolerance and compassion.”

The workshop explored socio-cultural factors influencing masculinity, behavioural issues and looked at how a more supportive school environment can be fostered.
