More than 100 members of the Island’s Malayali community celebrated the Onam Festival, with vibrant singing and dancing at the Riverside Centre, Newport, last Saturday.
The Onam is Kerala’s ancient harvest festival, which celebrates the legendary home-coming of King Mahabali, a benevolent ruler whose reign is remembered as a golden age of prosperity and equality.
According to Hindu mythology, Mahabali was sent to the netherworld by Vamana, an avatar of Vishnu, but was granted permission to visit his people once every year – which Malayalis celebrate as Onam.
Over time, the festival evolved from agrarian thanksgiving into a cultural celebration featuring floral designs (pookkalam), traditional dances, boat races, and the grand vegetarian feast, known as Onam Sadhya.
The venue was transformed into a vibrant showcase of Kerala’s heritage, drawing families and well‑wishers from across the Island.
The festivities opened with a traditional theme dance, beautifully capturing the spirit of Onam. This was followed by the ceremonial arrival of King Mahabali, portrayed by
Midhun Padamadan, who delighted the audience and symbolised the prosperity and harmony the festival represents.
The event was formally inaugurated with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, and attended by Sandown town councillor Ian Ward, and Shanklin Deputy Mayor, Cllr Rajesh Patel.
The celebration continued through the afternoon, featuring performances, community interactions, and traditional displays.
One of the most anticipated highlights was the Onam feast served in the traditional way, offering an authentic taste of Kerala’s culinary heritage, and bringing everyone together in true festive spirit.
The celebration was organised under the leadership of Anto Scaria (Convenor), Rosanjo Bristow (Joint Convenor), Vishnu Tharakan (Secretary) and Faisal Mohammed (Treasurer). The event team was: Nidhi Benny, Aswathy Pradeep, Ayisha Ridha, Linta Bristow, Andria Varghese, Irshad, Aleena Stephen and many more dedicated volunteers, who worked tirelessly to deliver a memorable occasion
