The parable of the ‘Loaves and Fishes’ took on a new meaning on an Island beach last week.
Charlotte Barlow, of Sandown, was walking her dog, Ralph, along the Yaverland beach near the slipway, when she came across around 200 loaves of bread scattered across the sand.
She explained: “As I approached, I thought they were some rocks, but we weren’t near the cliff. It was only when I walked over that I realised it was bread and rolls.
“Ralph tried to start eating them, and I noticed lots of birds on the next beach and immediately thought they were missing out on a feast!”
Charlotte returned to the beach the next day but the bread had largely vanished as the seagulls realised how much they were missing out, and quickly came to enjoy the newly discovered food on offer.
Charlotte added: “There were hundreds of webbed footprints left in the sand.”
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has received no reports associated with a shipping mishap, although there is the likelihood that it was tipped over the side of a cruise ship.
