Can you help feed Benji and Balu?

Benji and Balu

The Wildheart Animal Sanctuary is putting out an unusual request this autumn, for hawthorn, hazel and willow branches to help feed its newest residents, European brown bears, Benji and Balu.

The rescued duo, who arrived at the Isle of Wight sanctuary in June after being saved from poor conditions in Azerbeijan, have been thriving in their new woodland habitat. However, keepers say the pairs’ growing appetites have left their enclosure looking rather bare.

“Brown bears aren’t renowned climbers, but Benji and Balu have even scaled a hawthorn to reach the berries at the top,” said the Wildheart team. “They’ve already flattened an elder bush in their bid for food, so now we’re putting out a shout for branches to make sure they get the diverse plant matter they need.”

In the wild, bears gorge on berries and foliage in autumn to build up fat reserves for winter. The sanctuary says Benji has already gained around 40kg since his arrival, now weighing around 204kg, while Balu is thought to be of a similar size.

The team are asking local residents and supporters to donate cut branches with leaves or berries still attached. “It’s wonderful to see them follow their instincts after years of captivity,” carers said. “But their appetite is enormous; if anyone can spare hawthorn, hazel or willow branches, Benji and Balu would be very grateful.”
