The Medina Quay Beefeater, in Newport, will permanently close its doors on September 10.
Parent company, Whitbread, confirmed the popular riverside eatery on Fairlee Road is among 106 Beefeater sites set to shut nationwide, as part of a restructuring plan to cut £250m in costs and 3,800 jobs across the UK.
Located near Seaclose Park, the location originally operated under Whitbread’s Table Table brand, before being converted into the Medina Quay Beefeater in late 2017. Situated alongside the River Medina, the pub and steakhouse has long been a favourite for Island residents and visitors attending the nearby Isle of Wight Festival.
Under Whitbread’s strategy, the firm is stepping back from stand-alone branded dining to focus on its core business, Premier Inn.
The company plans to convert some of its underperforming restaurant floor space into additional hotel rooms, but has not announced it’s long-term plans for Medina Quay, beyond saying it will continue serving breakfast, evening meals, and drinks exclusively to Premier Inn guests staying at the hotel.
