Planning permission has been granted to convert Riverway House, in Newport, into a new GP surgery, promising improved healthcare delivery for Island residents. The facility, managed by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Medina Healthcare will work alongside the existing Wootton Bridge surgery, which, following a successful local campaign against its closure, will remain open.
Together, the NHS says, the two sites aim to improve the availability of appointments and give patients more choice.
The new Newport site will feature modern consultation rooms, step-free access for those with limited mobility, and parking. The same practice team will work across both locations, ensuring continuity of care.
The NHS claims that the input of patients, who wanted their local surgery to remain open, and access to improved facilities, has directly influenced the new design.
Eugene Jones, of the NHS Trust, said the new facility will provide a “more accessible, comfortable environment” while maintaining the same high-quality service.
Business manager at Medina Healthcare, Simone Brett, called the development an “exciting step” for patients. She credited local feedback for shaping the plans.
The Riverway House surgery is set to open in the summer, with further improvements to the Wootton Bridge surgery also planned.
