More than 600 children from 22 Isle of Wight primary schools attended the Royal Isle of Wight Agricultural Society’s Education Day at the County Showground on Tuesday, May 19.
The event, held ahead of this year’s Royal Isle of Wight County Show on July 11 and 12, gave pupils the chance to learn more about farming, animals and rural life through a range of hands-on activities.
Twenty four areas of the County Show were represented during the day, with children getting up close to pigs, sheep and horses, as well as taking part in arts and sporting activities. Pupils were also able to handle animals, ask questions and enjoy tractor and trailer rides to the woodland area.
County Show chairman Graham Biss said: “We were delighted to give the children a fun but informative day. The real stars, as always, were the animals — it was wonderful to see the excitement and interest on the children’s faces.
“A heartfelt thank you to the County Show team of volunteers whose commitment and support helped to make the day such a memorable success.”
Karen Horton from St Saviour’s Primary School said pupils had enjoyed learning more about the farming industry on the Isle of Wight, including where food comes from, animal care and the role of agriculture in the local community.
She added that the woodland walk had been one of the highlights of the day.
Following the success of this year’s event, organisers are already planning to expand the Education Day in 2027. The next event is due to take place on Tuesday, May 18.
