Time Nor Tide Players, a new Island performing arts collective, are debuting their new production that retells the story of Molly Downer at Ventnor Fringe later this month.
This hard-hitting musical, that deals with the themes of inequality and superstition, is set in the 18th Century as Molly struggles to find her place in a world that cruelly judges her. The illegitimate daughter of a clergyman, she faces condemnation for her birth, her way of life, and her then forbidden love for another woman. Her struggle to be true to who she really is, equates to a story that resonates with those today in the LGBTQIA+ community.
Her moving story puts alienation and societal prejudices front and centre; it’s not afraid to shine a light on bigotry and misogyny while keeping its central message of hope.
“Although there are some very uncomfortable and triggering parts in this show, there are some extremely beautiful moments,” Paul Wilson, co-writer and director explains, “and it’s underpinned by hope and the triumph over adversity.”
The Molly Downer Musical will be performed on July 28, 29 and 30 at St Boniface Studios, Leeson Rd, Ventnor, PO38 1PR. Tickets are currently on sale and can be purchased on-line at mollydowner.com.
