This cutting from the Isle of Wight Observer published on 27th June, 1914 made us smile this week.
More than a century on, it’s reassuring to discover that, while many fashions change, one of the Island’s favourite pastimes, complaining about roads and traffic, remains gloriously untouched by time. Thank goodness that we no longer need the views of the public to decide how our roads are best maintained.
THE DUST NUISANCE.
To the Editor of the Isle of Wight Observer.
Dear Sir,-I am not an expert in road making and am not in a position to discuss the relative merits of tar or bitumen, but I do know this-that unless something is done to abate the dust nuisance some of the roads round Ryde will soon be almost unbearable.
In the middle of the town the roads are watered so continuously that they are all right, but Binstead Road and at times Queen’s Road are hopeless. There is a constant succession of motor cars, and on some days the dust is simply stifling. It must surely be the general wish of those who live in the neighbourhood, as well as those who use the road, that something should be done.
Yours truly,
PEDESTRIAN.
