On Sunday the Isle of Wight Grand National and Ashey Scurry takes place at West Ashey Farm in Ryde.
The rural community will be out in force for the well-loved scurry, with races that include the Puffing Billy Stakes, for ponies with riders under 15-years old with fences at around 2′ high, the Ashey Scurry with fences around 2’6” high, and the Isle of Wight Grand National with fences up to 4’ high over a 2 1/5 mile course. The well-stocked Goddard’s bar always proves popular, as does the hot and cold food, including a range of delicious home-made cakes.
With entries now closed to competitors, the outcome of Sunday’s events is keenly awaited. There is a sweepstake for those who would like the chance to win a couple of pounds. Don’t forget to take cash, as the mobile phone signal at Ashey Farm is unreliable.
Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome.
Sam Biles, who assists with the commentary of the event said: “We are thoroughly looking forward to the Scurry on Sunday. We have excellent entries this year, and are really pleased to be able to welcome back the Shetland ponies. Their young jockeys are so enthusiastic and their races provide a real spectacle. There are trains to Ashey Halt, by the racecourse from Havenstreet, if you want to come by steam.
“We are hoping for good weather for this fun-filled family event and good-to-firm conditions are expected. Come along and see the spectacle and enjoy a flutter on the sweepstake.”
