Bronze medallists IW at Inaugural Cherry Godfrey Cup

The Isle of Wight Ladies’ football team secured the Bronze medal, in a decisive 6-2 win over Guernsey at the inaugural Cherry Godfrey Cup. The eventual winners, the Isle of Man beat Jersey to take the title.

A spokeswoman for the IW Ladies’ team said: “A huge thank you to everyone involved in getting the squad over to Jersey to take part in The Cherry Godfrey Cup. The number of messages sent through to the squad, and the level of support shown to the squad is greatly appreciated. Reports of our games being watched in all sorts of places gave the girls a real boost. Thank you.”

Tanzy Cherry, chief operating officer at Cherry Godfrey added: “What a weekend of superb football, a huge celebration of women’s football across the islands, and the first ever Cherry Godfrey Cup champions, the Isle of Man.

“A massive thank you to the teams, officials, media, sponsors, supporters, and everyone else involved for their dedication and support. A particular shout out must go to the fantastic team at Jersey FA, I’m sure everyone will agree they have set the bar high as the very first host island!

“Congratulations to the Isle of Wight team for not only their brilliant performance in their matches, but the genuine team spirt and passion we saw from every single member of the squad across the tournament. It will be a memorable weekend for years to come and continues to bring a bright future for women’s football on the Islands – well done ladies!”.
