Last Friday’s Figgy Gig at CHOYD, Yarmouth, was a no-holds-barred celebration of women in honour of International Women’s Day.
Jean G-Owen set the tone with her Figgy Feminism sketch, proving the power of prosecco and cake in women’s politics. She and Cheryl May sang Islands in the Wight, their cheeky homage to female friendship. Holly Medland kept the audience spellbound with her woman-centred stories. Music lovers were treated to Ruth Hibbert, of 2Gether-in-Harmony, and Cheryl May’s delightful Ukulele Lady, while Tina Goode’s velvet vocals soared through La Vie En Rose.
Mrs Snelling’s tales of “community service” in Wight Link’s latrines, and Cheryl’s riotous Ode to a Handbag had the crowd in stitches. Cat James reminded everyone of the serious side of women’s lives in her spoken-word performance. John Luckett’s The Top 40 was a poetic triumph, and Two For The Show rocked the house with Man, I Feel Like a Woman. The night wrapped up with All Kinds of Women, a foot-stomping anthem, written by Jean, raised a heartfelt toast to the power of women!
The next Figgy Gig, is on May 9, at The Wheatsheaf, Yarmouth. Contact Jean: jean28owen@gmail.com for details.
