Isle of Wight comedian, Bernie Quinlan, has secured her place in the finals of the Hampshire Comedian of the Year 2025 after impressing judges at the semi-finals last Saturday. Competing against fellow Islander, Toby Collard, and seven other South Coast comedians, Bernie’s act was packed with confectionery-themed puns and risqué humour, leaving the audience in stitches.
“I was so nervous, but I knew my material well and hoped people would enjoy it. I was very surprised to get through!” Bernie said. Fans may have seen her perform the act at the popular monthly, Ballyrags Comedy Club, at FuBar in Ryde, which will continue at the Royal Esplanade Hotel following FuBar’s closure.
MC and judging panel member, Geoff O’Flanagan, praised Bernie’s performance: “She captivated audiences with an act full of unexpected twists and turns that kept the room hanging on her every word. Her bold and original style takes comedy in a completely fresh direction.”
Both Bernie and Toby have honed their craft at The Isle of Wight School of Comedy, led by teacher, Luc Valvona. Luc said: “When Bernie first started, she was so shy she could hardly get through a single line without apologising. The difference between then and now is night and day!”
The comedy school meets on Tuesday evenings and will move to The Department, in Ryde, after FuBar closes. For more information, visit ballyrags.com.
In addition to the main prize, Bernie is also in the running for Hampshire Female Comedian of the Year and Rookie of the Year. The final takes place on October 25 at The Attic in Totton.
