More than 130 Island pupils gave up their Saturday to take part in the annual inter‑school Mock Trial competition, at Newport Crown Court. Teachers, supporters, and court staff joined them at this busy time of year, with the event held by kind permission of His Honour Judge Michael Bowes KC.

Nine teams competed in what proved to be a close‑fought contest, with Christ the King College crowned winners, and taking home the trophy, which was presented by the High Sheriff, Jacque Gazzard. All three Crown Court judges travelled to the Island at their own expense, braving stormy conditions, and were full of praise for the high standard of preparation and delivery shown by the students.

The competition proved more than just a test of advocacy skills. Six pupils were so inspired by the experience that they have decided to pursue law as a career. Since the event was first introduced in 2012, during Nick Hayward’s year as High Sheriff. He wanted students to understand how our legal system works, and have the opportunity to go into the court. Since then thousands of Island pupils have taken part, with more than 60 going on to study law.
