Children will once again be able to camp and play on a field in Nettlestone, after the Bucks School Camp Association formally transferred the site to a new Island charity, The Haven. The six‑and‑a‑half acre field, on Eddington Road – known locally as the Scout Field – has hosted camping adventures since the 1930s, but has been largely unused since the pandemic. Its owners sought a new custodian who could ensure the land continued to benefit young people and, after three years of negotiation, the Charity Commission has approved the handover.
The Haven plans to upgrade the existing infrastructure and is inviting the community to help shape the field’s future. Trustee, Rose Gillett, said they were excited to see the space once again used for exploration, relaxation, and play, and that community consultation would guide how the site is managed. Fellow trustee, Andrew Bradstock, thanked the many professionals who supported the transfer and said the charity now looked forward to welcoming local people to get involved.
Former owners from the Buckinghamshire Schools Camp Association said they were delighted their long-running legacy of confidence‑building camping holidays would continue on the Island. Many Islanders still recall the bugle wake‑ups, beach trips and friendships forged on the field, and The Haven is keen to gather memories as well as ideas for future uses, from community growing spaces to nature‑based activities.
A community picnic will take place on Saturday 4 July, noon–2pm, as part of the Biosphere Festival, including an official handover and opening by the High Sheriff, Nigel Hartley. Anyone wishing to donate, share memories, suggest ideas, or volunteer can email connect@thehaveniow.org.
