Fort Victoria country park will play host to a series of guided rock-pooling and fossil walks throughout the summer holidays, offering families the chance to explore the Island’s rich coastal wildlife and prehistoric past.
Led by Isle of Wight council ranger, Anita Matheson, the sessions are open to all ages and require no advance booking. Participants are advised to come prepared to get their feet wet, as the walks delve into rock-pools teeming with marine life, such as sea anemones, tiny fish and scuttling crabs. There is also the chance to discover fossilised remains of turtles, sharks and even ancient crocodiles, all embedded in the shoreline.
The walks will run regularly through to late August, each lasting around one to one and a half hours. Sessions begin at varying times depending on the tide, and participants are asked to meet outside the Ranger’s Office at Fort Victoria.
The cost is £3 per person or £10 per family, with payment taken in cash only.
