The Isle of Wight Council has refused to grant a licence for Inteliports to conduct a pilot project for cross-Solent drone deliveries at the Mornington Road Car Park in Cowes.
The decision comes amid concerns about the processes used to make decisions regarding the project and the safety of the planned trials.
In a letter to residents and the town council, the decision was confirmed today, highlighting the council’s consideration of community feedback. The letter expressed gratitude to the community for their interest and input, stating, “After careful consideration of the feedback and the strong concerns from some residents against the trial, we will not be in a position to currently issue a temporary licence for use of the Mornington Road site.”
While the trials have now shifted to the County Showground in Northwood, they are limited to “up and down” movements within the site’s boundaries.
The letter further said, “We remain committed to working collaboratively with Inteliports in the future. This trial by Inteliports will progress using locations they have identified in privately owned rural areas.”
It is anticipated that any new location for the trials will require planning permission before proceeding.
Phil Jordan, Isle of Wight Council leader and cabinet member for transport and infrastructure, confirmed the news. He said: “We acknowledge the innovative potential of drone technology and the importance of skilled pilot schemes in ensuring safe and efficient operations.
“We are committed to working collaboratively with Inteliports in the future. This trial by Inteliports will progress seeking locations to be identified in privately owned rural areas.
