A sailor, who spent four years circumnavigating the world, is selling his beloved yacht.
Thom D’Arcy completed his epic 30,000-mile journey in 2020, starting and finishing at Yarmouth Sailing Club, where he originally learned to sail.
But now he feels the time is right to sell Fathom, a Vancouver 28, after first buying the yacht in 2013 from a couple in Ipswich. He is only her third owner.
Thom said: “It’s a long keel pocket cruiser with lots of space to keep stores. It’s tough for me to let her go, because she is part of my DNA, but all boats are compromises and I feel the timing is right.
“I’ve done a lot of work on her and she would be ready to take another journey around the world tomorrow. It’s ideal for someone who wants a good boat, but doesn’t want to take up their time and money refitting it. However, I’m happy to wait for the right person to come along.”
He added: “She was originally called Targladys, which I didn’t like as a name, so I changed it to Fathom because that included part of my own name. Naturally, it was done in a proper ceremony to please the sea gods!”
At the end of his journey, Thom, who left his job as a ship-broker to embark on his adventure, admitted: “I never really planned to sail around the world, I thought maybe an Atlantic circuit would be the maximum I could do, but I just kept going, and it got to the point where it was easier to continue.”
