Cowes Week campers escorted off site after boy ‘shoved’

Police were called to Waverley Campsite after a dispute broke out between Cowes Week campers, children and parents.

According to a campsite owner, a group of children were playing man hunter, running about and shining torches in three guys faces on Friday (August 3) at around 11.30pm – what started out as a joke quickly escalated and saw the police called.

Julian Adams, 39, an owner of Waverley Campsite explained the situation.

He said: “They had been drinking and were staying over for Cowes Week, it started off being funny but then they asked the kids to stop, one group carried on and very stupidly one of the guys shoved a seven-year-old boy over.

“Then the parents of the boy got involved, who had also been drinking, and they just ran over and were laying into these guys. The police were called and came very rapidly actually and decided the best course of action was to remove the guys from the site.”

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: “We received a report at 11.27pm on August 3 of a public order incident between two groups of people at Waverley Park Holiday Centre, Old Road.

“Police attended and spoke to people at the scene. One group had moved on.

“No criminal complaints were made to police and no arrests were made.”
