Could Newport Parish Council’s name be changed?

Residents are being asked their views on a proposal to add Carisbrooke to the name of Newport Parish Council.

The Isle of Wight Council (IWC) has received a request from Newport Parish Council to change its name to Newport and Carisbrooke Parish Council.

If it happens, the new title won’t affect any other aspect of the running of Newport Parish Council – and all existing wards and elected members would remain as they are.

Before the IWC can make the change, it would like to receive resident’s opinions on whether they support the new name or not.

The council has launched a two-week consultation starting Monday (July 23) and closing on Monday (August 6).

Newport Parish Council was formed in 2008 and currently has 14 elected members, taking in the Island’s county town and neighbouring Carisbrooke.

Newport Parish Council have been contacted to find out why the request has been made.
