Officers have secured three partial closure orders on properties in Newport, following reports of persistent drug‑related anti‑social behaviour, in a move officers say will improve life for people living nearby. The orders, granted by Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on May 20, give police the power to arrest anyone not authorised on the court order who enters or remains at the addresses over the next three months.
Evidence presented to the court detailed excessive noise, drug paraphernalia left in communal areas, and people attending the properties under the influence of drink and drugs at all hours. The issues centred on Nippert Court and two addresses in West Street.
The orders were obtained through joint work between the West Wight Neighbourhood Policing Team and housing providers, Southern Housing and Vectis Housing. Anyone entering the properties without authorisation will now be committing a criminal offence and can be arrested.
Sergeant Chantal Miller said tackling drug‑related harm remains a priority for the team. “This order gives us additional powers to deal with individuals behaving in an anti‑social manner and to address criminal activity in and around these properties. I hope this shows we will do all we can to stop anti‑social behaviour and the enormous impact it creates.”
Police are urging residents to continue reporting anti‑social behaviour so patrols can be targeted effectively. Information can be submitted via 101 or iw.observer/report-asb. In an emergency or if a crime is in progress, Islanders should call 999.
