The West Wight Heritage Centre, Freshwater, has hosted almost 50 Year 3 pupils from Freshwater & Yarmouth and Shalfleet Primary Schools, a first for the venue.
As part of a local study day, groups of eight children at a time viewed and answered questions on the centre’s current display about the three bridges over the River Yar. They also looked at some ‘then and now’ photographs of local shops, and viewed a large-scale local Ordnance Survey map from the mid-1980s, with some pupils being able to locate their houses.
Michaela Plant, a Year 3 teacher at Freshwater & Yarmouth Primary School, said: “It was such an interesting visit and I had great feedback from the children.
“Kassi-Anne told me: ‘Maybe other visitors can find out where you live on old maps’. Eden added: ‘It is the best place to find out about shops and our local area in the olden days!’
“And Benji said: ‘You can find out what the shops used to be. Did you know that the car wash in Totland used to be an electrical shop?’.
“It was a great experience for everyone.”
