Last Friday marked the start of Quarr Abbey’s annual photographic competition, in partnership with the IW Observer – an event that shines a spotlight on the creative talents of photographers across the Island.
This free-to-enter competition invites people of all ages and skill levels to capture the essence of “life at Quarr”, offering photographers the chance to highlight the beauty, culture, and unique charm of one of the Island’s most-loved landmarks. Whether it’s capturing the serenity of nature, the activity of local wild life, the beautiful surroundings, or any moment that shows life in the public areas of Quarr for its residents or visitors (with their consent), your creativity and eye for detail could win you a coveted spot in the Abbey’s summer exhibition.
There are categories for Children (aged 10 and under), Students (aged 11-18), Amateurs, and Professionals. This year, an exciting category has been added for schools, offering pupils the chance to contribute while competing for £250 worth of photographic equipment. Individual winners in other categories will receive £100 in Quarr Abbey vouchers, along with a professionally framed copy of their winning photograph, which will also be printed in the IW Observer. Winners will be invited to the exhibition’s official launch, an opportunity to celebrate their creativity and share their achievement.
You don’t need expensive equipment to take part as judges will be looking for images that create a sense of connection. Whether taken on an top-level DSLR or a mobile phone, each photograph will be judged on its ability to capture a moment of life at Quarr.
The competition runs until midnight on May 1, and entering is simple. Submit your photos (maximum size 22MB) via email to tracy.osborn@quarr.org, or send or drop off printed copies at Quarr Abbey’s farm shop or tea shop (addressed to Tracy Osborn), or the IW Observer’s office in St James’ Square in Newport. Remember to include your name, contact details, and the category you’re entering. Winners will be announced before the end of May, and judges’ decisions are final.
Please note that drone photographs are not eligible for this competition; remember there are endless possibilities for stunning images of Quarr Abbey from ground level.
Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity. Gather your cameras or phones, head to Quarr Abbey, and find inspiration in its timeless beauty.
