Can you write a short story?

Richard Cadell with Soo, Sooty and Sweep

Sight for Wight’s Short Story Writing Competition is back for its 14th year, after the success of last year’s event.

It was originally started by Sight for Wight patrons, crime authors Robert and Carol Bridgestock, who write under the name, RC Bridgestock. Competition organiser, Chris Cane, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for budding Island writers to become published authors and also win some great prizes. This year’s theme is ‘The Future’ which will give our writers scope, creativity and a chance to let their imaginations run wild!”

In addition to the usual age categories of under-8s, 8-11, 12-18 and 18+, this year there will be a special category to honour Edana Minghella, an avid supporter of the competition who sadly died last year. The winner of this category will be a story with strength, depth, emotion, well-being and creativity, all characteristics dear to Edana’s heart.

Each category winner will have their story read by one of this year’s celebrities, Richard Cadell of hand puppet, Sooty, fame, RC Bridgestock, Debbie McGee, assistant and widow of TV magician, Paul Daniels, and Chesney Hawkes, best known for his 1991 hit single, ‘The One and Only’.

Entry forms are available by email from admin@iwsb.org.uk or in person from: Waterstones in the High Street or Dress for Less in Pyle Street, Newport. The closing date for entries is November 3, with an award ceremony on December 8.
