Breaking through a pain barrier for good causes

Martyn Thorp

A Newport man has run more than three miles a day for 145 consecutive days to raise money for charity.

Businessman Martyn Thorp was hoping to continue for another 55 days, but had to give up last week after struggling with injury.

Martyn, 39, started his running marathon on October 1, and said: “I started to feel pain in my calf after about 100 days, but I kept on going mentally battling through the injury.

“I started to slow down my running so I could cope, but it just started to get harder. I had previously had this sort of pain when I was training for a marathon and it took me a year to finally recover. So, in the end, I decided to call it a day. But to complete 145 days, up against sorts of weather and some unexpected storms, has been amazing.

“I’m running for two charities: Mindset Bros who raise men’s mental health awareness, and Daisy Chain.

“The mental health aspect has been a driving force. I have had some amazing responses from guys who have their own problems and, because of my efforts, have started running or doing some exercise themselves. That’s what has helped to make it so worthwhile.”

So far, Martyn has raised around £600 from his efforts. To contribute to his charities, visit iw.observer/martyn-thorp.
