A 1940s Day was held at Brading Railway Station to raise funds for the heritage centre in the station.
Of particular interest was the signal box tour. Visitors were able to see how trains were signalled through the station during the age of steam, and allowed to have a go at operating the levers themselves. Of course, the signal box levers are no longer connected to Island line trains!
Musical entertainment in a 40s theme was provided by the Boogie Woogie Sisters, Hanna Brewer, the Chain Ferry Gang, and Sylvia and Alan. There was also dancing in a more exotic style by a group of belly dancers. Colin the magician entertained visitors, as did a pair of happy ponies, while a number of vintage cars were on display.
The vintage costumes were provided by members of Vectis 40s Vintage. Helen Williams, from the group, said: “I love the music, fashions and glamour, and I’m interested in all aspects of history.
“Some things were better back then. There was a real sense of community, which we are losing, although perhaps not so much on the Island.”
Station Manager, Carole Parks, described the heritage day as “brilliant”, and said any money raised was a bonus. There will be a further 40s Day at the station on September 22.
