Three men have been arrested after a fire broke out at the derelict Cygnet Hotel, Sandown, on Tuesday evening.

Emergency serves were called around 7.45pm with the police treating the blaze as arson.

Four fire engines, an aerial ladder platform, and crews from Sandown, Newport, Ventnor and Ryde were called to the scene on Carter Street, bringing the blaze under control with jets and hose reel jets.

The men, a 56-year-old from Shanklin, a 45-year-old from Sandown, and a 43-year-old from Newport, were all arrested nearby on suspicion of arson with intent to danger life in connection with the incident.

The derelict Cygnet Hotel has suffered from a number of previous fires, most recently in October. It has been boarded up for years. Last month, after children were seen regularly entering the site, schools were urged to tell pupils to stay out of the building as it was at risk of collapse.
