Two free events celebrate the IW Festival’s history

The Isle of Wight Festival’s global legacy is being celebrated this month with the launch of Ray Foulk’s updated edition of The Last Great Event, and a new exhibition in Newport. The 1970 festival drew an estimated 600,000 people, and was preserved on film and vinyl. Today, hundreds of thousands return annually for the 21st-century version in Newport, broadcast worldwide.

Published by Medina Publishing, the expanded paperback includes new chapters on the modern festival’s enduring impact, with over 50 photographs from recent years, courtesy of Festival director, John Giddings. Ray will launch the new edition at Medina Bookshop, in Cowes, on Thursday (August 21) at 6pm. Enjoy free entry, a talk from the author and a complimentary drink. “I’m proud to add a new section on these events,” said Ray. “May the IOW Festival go from strength to strength!”

Next Saturday (August 23) from 4–8pm, the Wight Music Experience Exhibition opens at Triple A Records, in Newport. Experience the exhibition which celebrates the festival history and Island music icons. From 2pm enjoy a film presentation and live music from the 1968–70 festivals. Free entry.
