The Freshwater Five story shown on stage

By Press Release Feb 26, 2023

Jamie Green, skipper of the Galwad-y-Mor, who has served 12 years in jail for the biggest drug smuggle in British history, is to appear at a post-show question-and-answer at Quay Arts, Newport, for the Island run of ‘The Freshwater Five’ play on Thursday (March 2).

The play details five men who were sentenced to a total of 104 years for conspiracy to import £53-million worth of cocaine, and is returning to the Island for a second stint.

Despite the five serving various amounts of time in prison, they continue to proclaim their innocence.

The play is written and directed by Island-born Samuel Bossman and Liam Patrick Harrison, whose research and development process and performances brought them into contact with the men’s legal champion, Emily Bolton. As well as the run at the Quay Arts, Newport, it will also be performed at theatres across the south coast.

Director Samuel said: “As a proud Islander, I was blown away by the incredible reaction to our research and development phase and original performances of The Freshwater Five.

“We are absolutely delighted and feel incredibly lucky to bring The Freshwater Five on tour, starting on our beloved Isle of Wight.”
Playwright Liam added: “As a creative team we feel privileged to be able to tell important, timely Island narratives – and hope that the next stage of this project continues to champion the story of the men of the Freshwater Five, their families and friends who continue to fight for justice.”

The play tells the story of the five men (Green, Jon Beere, Zoran Dresic, Daniel Payne and Scott Birtwistle) after being sentenced for the importation of the cocaine.

The production, supported by Arts Council England, will play for for five nights from February 27-March 3.
