The Figlet turns one and launches Issue Three

Jean G-Owen with The Figlet

Isle of Wight writers and artists gathered at Independent Arts, Newport, last Friday evening to celebrate the first anniversary of The Figlet literary magazine, and the launch of Issue Three.

Founded by Jean G-Owen, of the Naked Figleaf Press, The Figlet has grown from 30 contributors in its first issue to 50 in its latest edition, doubling in size within a year — a testament to the Island’s thriving literary scene.

“This magazine started as my ‘brain-baby’, an idea to create a space where Island creatives could connect and showcase their work,” said Jean G-Owen. “One year on, The Figlet is not just an idea – it’s a community in print.”

Issue Three features a diverse collection of poetry, short fiction, essays, opinion pieces, book reviews, and illustrations, including an interview with Father Luke Bell of Quarr Abbey.

The launch event featured live readings from contributors, and performances from WordSpokenSong and Tina Goode.

Copies of The Figlet are available at Medina Bookshop, The Cabin in Freshwater, Independent Arts in Newport, and other Island outlets, or directly from Naked Figleaf Press. Submissions for Issue Four are now open. For more details, contact Naked Figleaf Press at jean28owen@gmail.com.
