Talks at Quarr Abbey

By Press Release Jun 23, 2023

Jim Towey, a close friend and trusted advisor to the late Saint Teresa of Calcutta, will spearhead a month of events and talks at Quarr Abbey in July.

Jim, who did the first reading of her canonisation in 2016, and is the founder of Aging with Dignity, will be at the Abbey for a free talk on Tuesday, July 11, between 2.30pm and 3.30pm. From 3.30pm until 4.30pm, there will be a signing session of his book ‘To Love and be Loved: A personal portrait of Mother Teresa’, no booking is required.

Finally, between 6pm and 8pm there is an ‘Audience with Jim Towey’, including a two-course meal, costing £50, which again, has to be booked on-line.

Abbot Xavier Perrin said: “Jim’s visit to Quarr is really a great opportunity we are very much looking forward to.

“He is a remarkable man with a rich career in the private and the public sectors in the US. He is widely known for his reflection and action on the end of life. However, it is probably for his work together with Mother Teresa of Calcutta for which he is best known.

“In 1985, he began working as a US legal counsel to the Missionaries of Charity, he arranged immigration matters for the order’s sisters and prevented the unauthorised use of Mother Teresa’s name and image.

“His book ‘To Love and Be Loved’ has been widely received as one of the best books on Mother Teresa.”

Between July 11 to 13, there will also be a range of free talks including audiences with Abbot Xavier, Abbot Christopher Jamison, Dom Luke Bell, Jake Esman, Dr David Tomalin, Dr Dominic Fontana and Richard Smout. All these talks must be pre-booked on-line because of limited spaces.

There is also a chance to meet Quarr’s tenancy farmer, Matt Legge, on July 13, 10.30-11.30am, who will talk about his business of producing specialist Angus cattle and Suffolk and Jacob sheep.
