The issue of fair funding for Island primary schools has been raised in Parliament by Joe Robertson, MP for Isle of Wight East.
Speaking during education questions, Mr Robertson described the national school funding criteria as a ‘blunt instrument’ that fails to reflect the unique challenges of rural schools on the Island which are separated from the mainland by sea.
Mr Robertson highlighted his opposition to proposed closures of Brading, Oakfield, and Wroxall primary schools earlier this year while acknowledging that falling pupil numbers present a significant challenge for the Isle of Wight Council.
“National per pupil funding criteria are a blunt instrument for fairly funding schools in rural areas like mine on the Isle of Wight,” said Mr Robertson.
He urged Education Ministers to meet with him and representatives of the Isle of Wight Council to address the issue, saying fairer funding is needed to prevent unnecessary closures.
The Minister for School Standards, Catherine McKinnell acknowledged Mr Robertson’s concerns and recognised the complexities of school funding on the Island. “I appreciate the concerns the honourable gentleman raises… I’m more than happy to continue this discussion further, as I appreciate it’s a very important issue for his constituency,” she said.
Mr Robertson is following up the opportunity for further talks with the IW Council and the Department for Education.
