Student business impresses Charlie

An on-line subscription business started as part of a Year 10 project at Ryde School has impressed an Island businessman.

Five female students at the school have started up Wisteria, a subscription period package which sends out biodegradable period products, along with comfort items and treats every month. As well as making a profit, the goal of the business is to educate girls and women about periods and help to make them feel comfortable and confident.

One student said: “Our business idea derived from our own experiences, which contributed towards our mission of helping females on their period feel less embarrassed and uncomfortable when going out and buying period products. With Wisteria, there’s no need to worry because you can access these products from the comfort of your own home.

“Our unique selling point is that we are environmentally friendly, as our tampons and pads are fully biodegradable. An average of 500 million sanitary products end up in landfill every month, taking up to 800 years to decompose. It was important that our pads and tampons would be beneficial for the environment.”

Charlie Panayi, of Red Squirrel Estate Agency, who was asked to act as a business mentor for the group, said: “To be honest, I did wonder if there would be the work ethic and know-how; however, what I can say is these five young ladies have really impressed. In a matter of weeks, they have created a business plan, logo, branding, and website and sold products!

“I strongly believe that we should be celebrating young people wanting to be more and do more and this demonstrates to young people that if they can focus, they can achieve.

“They really have started well and are clearly destined for great things. I wish them every success.”
