Stepping into spring with ‘Chelsea Comes to Carisbrooke’

St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School pupils have planted strawberries and pumpkins into old footwear as part of their contribution to ‘Chelsea Comes to Carisbrooke’, a fringe gardening initiative inspired by the Chelsea Flower Show.

The project sees locals using quirky and unusual containers for planting around the village, with children proudly bringing in old shoes to transform into colourful, living displays which now line the school path.

Head of school, Mrs Mauri, praised the children’s enthusiasm and the community effort: “Wow! What a lovely display for our community to enjoy. I would like to thank Louisa and Nadia for volunteering their support, helping the children, and providing the amazing plants. Gardening supports a wide and varied curriculum and it’s fantastic that our children are part of a local festival.”

Some of the planted-up footwear is now on display at the school entrance.
