Rewilding school planned for Island

The Island could become home to a new International School of Rewilding (ISR), a centre for environmental education and research focused on restoring nature, building skills, and supporting the green economy.

Plans have been put forward to develop the 140-hectare (346-acre) site in Sandown, within the UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve, into a base for rewilding, marine science and regenerative land management. Proposals include wetland restoration, possible introduction of species such as European elk, and the creation of new learning facilities, labs, and year-round student accommodation.

The project also aims to link local education to future green industry jobs, and will work in partnership with universities, environmental groups and local businesses. Supporters include the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, Artecology, RSPB and Natural England, and discussions are underway with Sandown Town Council. The team behind the project hopes it could be operational within five years.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to place Sandown, The Bay, and the Isle of Wight at the heart of global environmental recovery,” said project leaders.

The ISR would run as a not-for-profit organisation, preserving public access while delivering sustainable development, innovation, and year-round visitor facilities. It is intended as both a centre of international research and a community-focused hub for ecological regeneration.

If approved, the scheme could mark a major step forward in the Island’s role as a leader in rewilding and environmental restoration.
