Plans are back on the table for an extra care housing development at the site of a former residential care home.
It has been nearly two years since proposals came forward to demolish the derelict Polars on Staplers Road and replace it with houses, flats and bungalows. The IW Council is now considering revised plans after changes were made to the design and layout of the buildings. The development has also been arranged so trees can be retained along the property boundary to preserve privacy for neighbours.
The former care home, which until 2017 was run by Somerset Care, has been demolished in the last year with the site now vacant apart from some wooden logs.
The overall scheme could see company, Specialised Supported Housing, build 44 properties — 20 of which would provide homes for those requiring additional help and care to live independently. The other 24 properties would be sold on the open market.
Island Roads has objected to the revised plans saying it does not address the highways concerns it has had about previous iterations of the scheme. The highways body said the internal road layout and the junction on to Staplers Road fail to provide adequate visibility or cater to the needs of all users. If the council approves it, Island Roads has suggested eight conditions including improving the bus shelter, the production of a construction management plan and a layby built in the neighbouring Wallace Close.
