Island residents can mark Thursday, May 1, on their calendars, as elections will be taking place. Town, parish, and community council elections were already scheduled, and a by-election for the vacant Central Rural seat, on the Isle of Wight Council, is also likely to be held on the same day.
The Central Rural electoral division, which includes Godshill, Arreton, Rookley, and Chillerton, will be electing a new representative to elect a successor to Suzie Ellis, who resigned her seat at the end of last year.
While these elections are proceeding, the Isle of Wight Council’s “all-out” elections – originally scheduled for May – have been postponed to 2026 due to the government’s devolution plans. A number of IW Councillors have complained about the elections being postponed. They still have time to resign and stand for re-election on May 1.
To take part in these elections, residents must be registered to vote. Those who have recently moved should ensure their registration is updated by Friday, April 11. For those unable to attend polling stations in person, applications for postal votes must be submitted by 5pm on Monday April 14. Photographic ID will be required to vote, those without acceptable ID, such as a passport or driving licence, can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate by Wednesday, April 23.
Anybody interested in standing for town or parish council, can ask for a nomination pack from Isle of Wight Council Electoral Services. Completed forms must be submitted by Wednesday, April 2 at 4pm.
Further information on registering to vote, applying for postal votes, or obtaining voter ID can be found on the Isle of Wight Council’s website.
