A new dawn for inclusive education on the Island began last week as Lionheart School officially opened its doors in Newport, replacing the former Island Learning Centre.
Following a refurbishment and rebrand, the Albany Road site is focuses on supporting secondary age pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs, and those coping with medical issues that prevent regular attendance.
Staff, students, and community figures gathered to celebrate the relaunch. Head teacher, Andrew Hatherley, described the change as “a new beginning, one that reflects our commitment to helping every young person thrive.” He emphasised that the focus is as much on emotional wellbeing as on education, adding: “True learning happens when children feel safe, supported, and valued”. Education cabinet member, Cllr Claire Critchison, hailed the reopening as “a powerful milestone in ensuring every child gets the support they deserve.”
