Free Riverfest fun on Saturday at Newport Quay

Thousands of people flocked to Newport, on Saturday, to enjoy a day of music, magic, fun and games, with the return of the annual Riverfest.

The free feast of entertainment was organised by the Newport Carnival Committee, with chairman, Paddy McHugh, saying: “It was a phenomenal turnout and I’d estimate we had around the same numbers as last year even though we didn’t have a celebrity at the event.

“I’d say around 6,000 people visited and we have had some great feedback. I might help organise the day, but an event this size could not be run without the team of volunteers who give up their time to help. They make the day for everyone.

“From the time we started at 10am, the crowds never stopped coming into the town and the quay. I’m absolutely chuffed for everyone. Next year, we’re hoping it will be even bigger and I’m already working with the Island’s sailing clubs to make something happen which will give it another twist.”

The day was opened by the Island’s High Sherriff, Jacque Gazzard, and Ray Harrington-Vail, formerly of the Footprint Trust, who founded the event.

The entertainment started with a parade, led by the Vectis Corps of Drums, from St Thomas’ Square to Newport Quay, and the firing of a cannon to mark the official opening.

Throughout the day there were performances from magicians, Stevo and Kai, the Medina Marching Band, live music from Flash Kirby, line dancing with the Long Island Stompers, Natalie as Kylie Minogue, FaT Samba Band, Ali’s Fitness Fusion and the Cornerstone Band.

There were also arts and crafts, stalls, face-painting, vintage tractors, live animals, steam-engines, vintage bikes, pirate stalls and fairground rides.
