More than 100 children from across the Island took part in the final Chance to Shine Cricket Skills Festival of the summer, held at Newclose County Cricket Ground.
The free event, part of a national programme bringing cricket into more state schools, saw young players enjoy a packed day of games and activities focused on teamwork, confidence and fun. Children showcased a wide range of skills — from batting and bowling to diving catches.
Andy Day, the event co-ordinator, said: “This festival isn’t just about cricket. It’s about building confidence, encouraging teamwork, and creating a love for the game, especially for those who might not otherwise get the chance.
”The event was the last of four festivals held at Island cricket grounds this summer, open to every primary school. A team of student leaders from Carisbrooke College, having completed the Chance to Shine Young Leaders programme, helped deliver the day, supported by peers from The Bay, Ryde Academy and The Island Free School.
Cllr Ian Dore, chairman of the Isle of Wight Council, attended in full sports kit — complete with civic chain. “It was a joyous event and a celebration of all that cricket offers young people,” he said. “From fitness and co-ordination to discipline and teamwork, the benefits are huge — and above all, it’s fun.”
Chance to Shine has introduced more than seven million children to cricket since 2005. For details on local clubs, visit iw.observer/iw-cricket-board.
