Last week senior sides enjoyed success over mainland sides. Ventnor’s Dineth Thimodya hit a majestic century, and there were 6 wickets for Shanklin’s Ben White. On the Island, Souvak Sanyal recorded a ton for Ventnor, and Newport’s Gareth Bricknell enjoyed a 5-wicket haul and match-winning knock of 55.
Ventnor enjoyed a successful weekend, securing a 1-wicket victory over the MCC as part of their 175th Anniversary celebrations, with the visitors scoring 233 all out in the 48th over. Archie Lucy took 4-18, and all-rounder, Dan Cox, 3-48.
In reply the Islanders saw opener, Dineth Thimodya, hit 56, including 3 sixes, skipper, Dan Cox, 73, including 4 sixes, and a vital 40 from Will Mew to reach 234-9 in the 40th over.
Southern Premier and Hants
In the Southern Premier League One, Ventnor won by 2 wickets away at Hook & Newnham Basics, with Hook setting a target of 266-8 off 50 overs. There were 3 wickets for George Watts, and 2 apiece for Ollie Morgan and Dan Cox.
Thimodya opened for the Islanders and struck a match-winning 140 not out, with 6 sixes and 14 fours. Fellow opener, Josh Carpenter, added 32, as Ventnor scored 267-8 in the 49th over and maintained third place.
In Hants Division Two B, Ventnor II XI won by 3 wickets at home to Hythe & Dibden, with the visitors limited to 225-9. Kevin Cooper returned 3-32, and Ethan Short 2-43, alongside holding 3 catches.
Ventnor’s Martin Blackman hit 70 before being run out in the run-chase, Kevin Cooper scored 37, and there was a match-winning unbeaten 33 from Ethan Short, as the Island side reached 231-7 in the 37th over. They claimed 23 points and maintained second spot.
Ryde won by 69 runs away at Havant, with Havant all out for 145. Openers, Ian Hailes (97 not out) and Ellis Ridett (56), shared a partnership of 125, from a final score of 214-6 off 45 overs. Havant couldn’t get a foothold in the match, with Ryde’s Mark Tuckwell and Ash Goldsmith taking 3 wickets each, and Ian Hailes 2, to bowl Havant out for 145 in the 37th over.
Shanklin & Godshill won by 10 wickets at home to Purbrook, in Division Three B, with opening bowlers, Ben White (6-16) and Tom Quaife (4-21), skittling the visitors out for 38 in the 11th over.
In reply, openers Olly Niemiec (33) and Matt Lambourne (3) knocked the runs off in 7 overs to secure 24 points and maintain fourth place.
Island Leagues & Cups
Division One leaders, Newport, won by 7 wickets at home to St Helens, with the visitors setting a target off 158-9 off 40 overs. Ollie Stubbings contributed 31, skipper, Marc Allen, 38, and Gareth Bricknell claimed 5-29, before opening to hit 55 as ‘Port reached 162-3 in the 32nd over to win.
Souvak Sanyal’s 105 not out helped Ventnor III win by 131 runs away at Ryde 2nds, setting 222-5 off 40 overs, with 2 wickets for Jerin Jose. In reply, there were 2 wickets each for Sam Read, Sean Turner, James Curtis and Rafe Hawkins to bowl Ryde out for 91 in the 30th over. Top scorer, Dan Parker, hit 23.
Northwood won by 6 wickets away at Wight Whizzers. The home side batted first and were all out for 135. Midhun Padamadan Devassy struck 31, and bowler, Simon Goldsmith, claimed 4-32 for ‘Wood.
John Jones (37) and Kerry Rice (29 not out) led the reply as the visitors reached 136-4 in the 25th over for victory.
In Division Two, leaders Newport II won by 9 wickets away at Shanklin & Godshill III, with Shanklin’s opener, Jim Thorn’s 28 helping set 118-8 off 35 overs, with 3 wickets for Oliver Owens. Skipper, Paul Attrill’s opened with 59 not out. He was supported by Swagath Chanila Ramachandra’s unbeaten 42, which secured victory with a score of 121-1 in the 19th over.
Shanklin & Godshill II won a cliff-hanging match by 4 wickets away at Northwood II, with the home side setting 227-7 in 35 overs. Nick Stafford (52), Liam Roberts (69) and Liam Goldsmith (56) all contributed, and Nathan Moore and Norton Mew toiled for 2 wickets each. Shanklin kept to the run-rate and knocks from all batsmen allowed Max Bushby-Harris (36 not out) and Alfie Pease (10 not out) to see Shanklin win on 228-6 with 2 balls remaining.
Captain, Gary Freeston’s 45, from a total of 190-8, helped Freshwater win by 101 runs away at Ventnor IV. In reply, 3 wickets from Dav Maclean, and 2 apiece for Glen Bailey, Justin Pinder and Sam Vandecasteele bowled Ventnor out for 89.
In the Fred Winter Cup group B, Porchfield won by 210 runs at home to Arreton, with opener, Toby Corbin (84), and skipper, Alex Oliver (80 not out), helping Porchfield reach 318-8 off 35 overs. The opening partnership of 139 was broken by Roxy Powell, with Noah Cherry and Ed Halson claiming 3 wickets each. Arreton opener, Josh Gregory, top scored in a reply of 108-8, with Callum Capon taking 4-10 for the home side, who top their group.
