Last weekend saw young cyclist, Finley Manser-Grundy, make his debut in the mini-downhill racing scene, in the Forest of Dean.
Finley, aged just 7, was racing on the same track used by Jordan Williams, World Cup downhill winner. Competing in the 8–9-year-old category, Finley faced one of the most technical courses he has ever ridden — a Black-graded downhill track, notorious for its steep drops, tight turns, and challenging terrain. Finley was the youngest competitor in the field, and riding on the smallest wheel bike.
Heavy rain all weekend had turned the course into a mud bath, testing riders’ skill and resilience. Despite the treacherous terrain, Finley delivered a clean first run, which seeded him sixth overall.
On his second run, Finley looked fast and confident, pushing hard to improve his time. Unfortunately, a crash on the second-to-last corner left him tangled in his bike, costing him precious seconds. Even so, he finished seventh, a solid result given the circumstances.
Dad, Jack Grundy, said: “I’m so proud of Finley – despite the crash, he came away from the event loving the experience and has gained great insight for future racing at this level. We’re really looking forward to seeing what 2026 will bring for Finley.”
