The Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce has confirmed that CEO, Rob Johnson, will step down later this year, with a formal handover planned for the Chamber Awards in September.
Mr Johnson, who joined the Chamber only in August last year, was appointed after outgoing chairman, Stephen Holbrook, said his “extensive local knowledge and passion for the Island’s businesses make him the ideal person to lead the Chamber forward”.
The Chamber issued a press release, and removed the webpage announcing Mr Johnson’s appointment, after the IW Observer asked about rumours that he was leaving.
The organisation says it is entering a “significant and exciting new chapter” as it strengthens its influence, expands strategic partnerships and develops a long term vision for Island businesses. Delivering that strategy, the Board says, now requires full time leadership, something it says Mr Johnson cannot provide due to growing national and local commitments.
Mr Johnson said it had been a privilege to lead the Chamber during a period of change, and that the organisation is in a strong position. He added that he looks forward to handing over the reins in September.
The Chamber’s Board has already identified a successor, and expects to announce the new Chief Executive shortly.
Following reports of discussions about a possible merger with Hampshire Chamber, the IW Chamber has confirmed that it will remain independent, representing Isle of Wight businesses while working collaboratively with regional and national partners where it benefits members.
