A powerful adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful is coming to the Apollo Theatre this February.
The author, best known for his novel War Horse, wrote Private Peaceful twenty years ago and has described it as his favourite work. This adaptation by Simon Reade sees an ensemble cast tell the story of Private Tommo Peaceful (played by talented young actor, Harrison Hartup) in this deeply-moving drama.
For this production the Apollo will take audiences to rural Devon and the battlefields of Northern France during the First World War. Private Peaceful tells the story of two brothers, Tommo and Charlie, whose tough rural childhood, framed by the loss of their father, forges an irrevocable sibling loyalty. Until one day they both fall for the same girl. And then the Great War comes. The 18-year-old Tommo, whilst in the trenches, takes us on a journey through his most cherished memories and tells his story of courage, devotion, family and friendship on what may be his last night on earth.
The play is directed by husband and wife duo, Amy and Dan Burns. They use projection and technical elements to transform the audience from the Devon countryside to the horrors of the trenches.
Private Peaceful runs at the Apollo Theatre, Newport, from 3rd-11th February (not Sunday or Monday) at 7.30pm. For more information and to buy tickets visit www.apollo-theatre.org.uk.
