Islanders are being urged to swap short car journeys for cycling this month, as part of the Isle of Wight Council’s ‘Life’s Better by Bike’ campaign.
The initiative aims to promote cycling as a healthier, greener alternative, supporting both personal well-being and the Island’s environment. It also highlights the benefits of cycling for physical fitness, mental health, and reconnecting with nature.
Simon Bryant, the Island’s Director of Public Health, said: “Regular cycling can reduce stress, improve mental focus, and support heart health; it’s also a great way to enjoy time outdoors with friends and family. Life really is better by bike, and we’d love to see more Islanders joining in this June.”
The council will be promoting local cycle routes suitable for beginners and families, encouraging residents of all ages to get involved.
With around 200 miles of cycle tracks, byways and bridleways across the Island, there are plenty of opportunities to explore by bike.
While recognising that not all routes are ideal, the campaign also seeks feedback from cycling groups to help improve the Island’s infrastructure. The council acknowledges that walking may be a more accessible option for some, and encourages all residents to stay active and reduce car use where possible.
Islanders are invited to share photos of their cycling adventures, using the hashtag #LifesBetterByBike.
