Creative pupils from Oakfield Primary School in Ryde have been recognised at County Hall after winning a flag design competition for this year’s PEACH Games.
Each school taking part was allocated an island to represent, and Oakfield was given St Helena. Pupils rose to the challenge, producing a colourful and meaningful design capturing the spirit of both the island, which is in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean, and the games.
The flags were judged by IW Council chairman, Cllr Ian Dore, and Kev Winchcombe and Ben Gard, from the IW Island Games Association. After careful consideration, Oakfield’s St Helena flag was chosen as the winner.
Cllr Dore, impressed by the design, cheekily asked if he could keep the flag to brighten up his office. Three pupils – Jessica, Neo and Tilly – were invited to County Hall, where they presented it to him. During their visit, they toured the council chamber, tried on the chairman’s chain, and tested out the gavel.
Cllr Dore praised their work, saying the flag was “full of colour, energy and meaning” and would now take pride of place in his office.
Hannah Doyle, deputy headteacher, said the school was proud to take part in the Games and grateful for the chance to visit County Hall.
The PEACH Games, held at West Wight Sports Centre, involved more than 320 primary pupils and 80 secondary sports leaders, promoting activity, inclusion and leadership.
